Autralian news program 4 corners does the work Swedish media should have done a long time ago and paints a disturbing picture of the Swedish judicial system in their recently released documentary "Sex lies and Julian Assange". I strongly urge those who still think Sweden is in the right to defend the honor and rights of two female victims of sex crimes, to consider the facts revealed in this film. For us in Sweden who for years have tried to inform the public about Sweden's crimes against human rights, the film is a welcome confirmation indeed.
A short summary
He humiliated the US
First the reporters go over some facts about what has led up to the absurd situation we are now witnessing. Facts that is already known for most people following the case. Here is first a short summary of that information:
In 2009 when staying in Reykjavik Assange recieved and published what has later been called the "Cablegate" documents. It was after attending a cocktail party at the american embassy, that Assange mysteriously came into possession of hundreds of classified US diplomatic cables. Until this day the US intelligence has yet to figure out how, despite a massive internal investigation they have so far come up blank.
This was Wikileaks first humiliation of the most powerful superpower in the world, but it was nothing compared to what was to come. In April 2010 Wikileaks published the film collateral murder, showing US soldiers gunning down unarmed civilians in Iraq. And the afghan war logs exposing the truth about the US war against terror in Afghanistan.
Eight months after his taunting of the US, on the 11th of August 2010 Julian Assange lands in Stockholm. Invited by the Swedish Brotherhood movement. An organisation with close ties to the Swedish social democrat party and with members as Anna Ardin and former minister of justice Tomas Bodström. Now a lawyer who runs a firm together with partner Claes Borgström. The same Borgström who later will represent Anna Ardin and Sofia Wilén in the Swedish case against Julian Assange.
Assange had by now become a cyber celebrity and was greeted as such. Everybody wanted to discuss cooperation with Wikileaks and Julian Assange was even offered his own column in Swedens leading tabloid Aftonbladet. The conference was not however the soul reason for Assanges visít to Sweden. He was also there to discuss getting serverspace for Wikileaks in the bahnhof facility in Stockholm.
Bahnhof serverbunker in Stockholm
An amazing facility housed in an old bomb shelter strong enough to withstand a nuclear explosion on top of it. The discussions were led with the leader of the Swedish pirate party Rick Falkvinge. The pirate party who themselves rent server space in the shelter and who in turn now offered Wikileaks some of it.
"He looked at me"
On August the 16:th 2010 Julian Assange caught a train from the central station in Stockholm. He was not travelling alone. His companion was Sofia Wilén. A 26 year old admirer. As Julian Assange left her apartment the next day after a night of consensual sex, Before he left they had breakfast together. He had no idea that his life soon would turn into turmoil. In fact none of them probably did.
Two days earlier Julian Assange had spoken at a conference held in LO borgen, the powerful trade union headquarters in Stockholm. Attending the conference were two young women. Sofia Wilén and Anna Ardin. Assange was staying in Ardins flat. They had slept together the previous night. Later she would tell a friend she had a "wild weekend" with Assange. Sofia Wilén was enthralled by the appearance of Assange. She texted to a friend during his talk The message read "He looked at me".
Sofia Wilén stayed at home after Julian Assange left her apartment, worrying about the risk of having contracted an STD since they had had unprotected sex during the night. She later rang Anna Ardin, Assanges lover of the previous week. The two women started to exchange text messages with eachother discussing what had happened. Eventually they ended up at the policestation at Klara norra but they did not file any charges against Julian. Their concern was only to find out if they could get Assange to be tested for STD:s should he refuse.
Klara Norra police station
Expressen immediatly got the news
But the policewoman Irmeli Krans, a friend of Anna Ardin from the social democratic party where they both are very engaged in feminist issues, interpreted what the girls said as some sort of sexcrime. And that resulted in a duty prosecutor issuing an arrest warrant the same night for Julian.
The news reaches the big tabloid Expressen. A sleaze magazines biggest dream coming through. A story involving sex, politics and international intrigue.
What more could a tabloid reporter hope for?
The question of how Julian assanges name was leaked to the paper has never been answered. Why Expressen put Julian Assanges name and picture on their first page together with the word RAPE in capitol letters are easier to understand. Which tabloid could resist a temptation that size? In the end tabloids are there to make money for their owners.
Assange did go to the Swedish police 10 days after the first allegations were made. He was questioned but never charged with any crime, and he was free to leave the country while the investigation continued. In mid Septmber he got a message from his former lawyer Mikael Hurtig that the prosecutor did not want him for an interview and that he was free to leave Sweden. On the 27:th of September he left the country in good faith.
12 days later he was informed that Sweden had issued a warrant for his arrest. Three weeks later Wikileaks launched their third big hit against the US. The Iraq warlogs.
Terrorists, dictators and Julian Assange
Immediatly after this release the swedish prosecutor upped the anty issuing a international red notice for his arrest. Red notices are normally preserved for terrorists and dictators. The president of Syria does not have a red notice alert. Khadaffi only got a yellow one. But for some reason the Swedish prosecutor saw fit to issue one for Julian assange.
It was something previously totally unheard of for a red notice to be issued for an allegation of this kind.
The timing of the red notice could not have been worse. Private bradley Manning had at this time leaked a quarter of a million classified documents and Julian Assange was anxious to get them out. A publication that later became known as cablegate.
An outraged Washington now set up a crack team to take on Wikileaks. They also put up a questionable financial blockade to starve Wikileaks of funds. For the US, cablegate was the final straw. Politicians sat in national TV and urged the CIA to "take him out". Prime minister in Australia, Julia Gillard also condemned Julian Assange and Wikileaks. In fact none of the western world leaders defended the legal right for Wikileaks as journalists to publish legally obtained documents for the people.
Refused the right to appeal to the EU court of human rights
For more than 500 days Julian Assange fought the extradition to Sweden, sensing that Sweden must be having ulterior motives for the unprecedented manhunt they had initiated. But on the 14 July the English supreme court ruled against him. Five days later Julian Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy. In a phone call with the Australian reporters from the Embassy he reveals why.
Sweden had announced that he would be kept in jail indefinitely under harsh conditions. The same morning a service team from the company that managed his foot bracelet had turned up unannounced placing another foot bracelet on him, claiming it was all part of routine maintenance. The next day the crown prosecution service acting on behalf of the Swedish government requested that the 14 days Julian had to appeal to the European court of human rights would be reduced to zero.
A disturbing picture of Swedish justice
Ardin in her apartment
Given information from the defence and other verified information the reporters of 4 corners now put together the story of what really happened during those crucial three weeks in August. And here is where it gets really interesting.
On August the 11:th Assange arrives in Sweden to give a lecture. Invited by the brotherhood movement. A branch of the powerful Swedish social democrat party.
He was offered to stay in Anna Ardins apartment in Stockholm since she was going to be away, but Ardin arrived home early on Friday the 13th. She invited Assange to stay the night and they had sex.
She would later tell the police that Assange had pinned her down and ignored her requests to use a condom. Assange denies this.
The following day Assange adressed the conference with Ardin at his side.
Later that night Ardin organized a cray fish party. She posted a Twitter message.
"Julian wants to go to a crayfish party. Anyone who have a couple of available seats tonight or tomorrow"
The crayfish party was held that night in the yard outside her apartment. It went on until the early hours of the morning. Ardin twitted at 2am.
"Sitting outside at 2 a clock and hardly freezing with the worlds coolest smartest people. It´s Amazing!"
A guest at the party would later tell the police "it was a very hearty evening". When he offered to put Assange up in his apartment Ardin replied "he can stay with me". In spite she claims to have been raped by a man the previous night, she now throw a cray fish party to his honor and turn down suggestions of alternative accommodation for him.
Apparently none of these facts seem odd to either the Swedish police prosecutor or media, because none of them have ever commented on it.
The lawyer of the accusing women Claes Borgström denies to answer the questions from the reporter from 4 corners when asked to explain this, simply stating that "I will argue in court". However he agrees that it might look like a setup when you see the facts. He says though that he has an explanation for this, but is saving it for the court.
Claes Borgström, also is a long time member of the social democratic party and former party appointed head of the delegation of equality in sweden. A post you do not stand a chanse of getting in Sweden without beeing a devoted radical feminist.
Claes Borgström has among other things stated that he thinks Swedish men are like the taliban. It is statements like this that will render you a successful political career in Sweden.
But back to the story about what happened in Stockholm. It gets better.
The next day Sunday the 15:th, Julian Assange attended a dinner party at Stockholm restaurant Glenfiddich. Oganized by the founder of the pirate party Rick Falkvinge. Also at the dinner was Anna Ardin. Julian Assange arrived with Anna Ardin and he left with Anna Ardin. Afterwards Julian Assange woud again spend the night in her apartment.
Rick Falkvinge will not state his personal thoughts about the fact that Ardin both arrived and left with her alleged rapist. "I cannot do that because it would go into the merrits of extradition, I am just stating the facts, and if people want to draw conclusions, they can of course do so".
The following day on August the 16th, Julian Assange had sex with Sofia Wilén in her apartment. According to police records Anna Ardin was aware that he had slept with Sofia.
A friend later told the police that he had contacted Anna Ardin looking for Assange. She texted back:
"He is not here. He has planned to have sex with the kashmir girl every evening but not made it. Maybe he finally found time yesterday".
The same day the witness asked Ardin: "Is it cool he is living there? Do you want for me to fix something ellse?" According to the witness she replied:
"He doesn´t like sleep at nights so that´s a bit difficult. So he has a bit of difficulty taking care of his hygiene, but it´s ok. He lives with me. It´s no problem".
Three days later Wilén accompanied by Anna Ardin went to the Klara Police station to seek advice on whether Assange could be forced to take an STD test. Ardin had gone along primarily to support Sofia Wilén. Sometime during questioning the police informed the women that Assange was to be arrested for rape and molestation. Wilén was so distraught that she refused to say anything else. She also refused to sign the statement she already gave. Sofia Wilén has later stated that she felt railroaded by the police. Assange immediately got arrested in his absence as it´s called in Sweden.
"Hunted for rape"
Within hours the whole of Sweden knew that Julian Assange was "Hunted for suspicion of rape". The procecutors office or the police had informed tabloid Expressen about the suspicion even before they had told the suspect himself.
Julian wakes up the next morning to the news that he is wanted for two counts of rape and he is absolutely shocked.
The editor of Expressen claims that it was confirmed on record by the prosecutors office that there was an ongoing investigation against Julian Assange. Thereby the prosecutor broke the law.
It was at this time the case took a strange twist, Within 24 hours a more senior prosecutor dismissed the rape allogations, leaving only the lesser allegation of molestation.
Assange willingly went to the police on August the 30th and made a statement. During the interview he expressed his fear that anything he says would end up in the tabloid Expressen. The interrogator assured him and said: "I´m not going to leak anything".
"The interview word by word"
The interview was immediately leaked.
Swedish top lawyer Per E Samuelsson who now represent Assange:
Why was his name leaked to the tabloids?
Why was the case dropped and reopened again?
Why have you not informed the media that he waited in Sweden for five weeks voluntarily?
Why do you have to arrest him?
Why do you have to keep hom in handcuffs?
Why can you not conduct this in a proper manner?
The rest of the world sees it, but Sweden unfortunately does not.
It is perhaps understandable that Assange doubts that he would receive fair treatment from the Swedish authorities?
On September the 15th the prosecutor told Assange he was permitted to leave Sweden. Assange back in London would later offer to return within a month. The Swedish authorities said "too late". A second warrant had already been issued for his arrest.
4 corners interviews Swedish prosecutor Karin Rosander:
-Can you understand that the Australian people have trouble understanding how somebody can be accused in their absence when they haven´t even been interviewed, then have that rape case dropped, the arrest warrant removed, and then have it reopened, all in the space of a few days?
- Yes I can very well understand the confusion, and that is very hard to understand exactly how it works.
-Well you call it confusing, it might be slightly more than that?
-Well that´s the way it works here in Sweden, but I can understand the confusion, definitely.
Assange hunkered down in the Ecuadorian embassy has no doubt what his faith will be if extradited.
The US ambassador in Australia recently made a statement that we all have come to recognize by now. He said that the US had no interest in Julian Assange and that if they did the chances of getting him extradited from the UK was better than getting him extradited from Sweden.
Assanges US lawyer Michael Ratner on the other hand calls this "diplomatic speak" and says it does not mean anything. He is also saying that the US courts are still working to find grounds to charge Assange with crimes against the US. If sentenced he could face the death penalty or life in prison.
"If they flat out said: "we will not prosecute Julian assange", that would be a totally different kind of statement. If the US would just say that, then Julian Assange could leave the embassy and go to Sweden and deal with the issues there".
The grand jury subpoena.
4 corners have obtained a copy of a subpoena from a grand jury working out of Alexandria Virginia, which clearly shows that charges against Julian Assange are beíng prepared by the US justice department.
The crime they are aiming for is "conspiracy to commit espionage". This is shown by the number codes on the documents, says Michael Ratner.
One finally have to ask oneself the question why this cirkus have been allowed to cost both the Swedish And Brittish taxpayers millions and millions? As a citizen of Sweden I know how utterly difficult it is to get a prosecutor to do his duty and actually bring charges against someone who have committed a crime against you. I have tried several times, but to no avail. And this in spite of the fact that I myself have presented waterproof evidence that cannot be denied.
But in Julian Assanges case they are prepared to spend millions and issue terrorist warrants just to get an interview, even though it should be clearly obvious by now that he is totally innocent of the crimes he is wanted for.
This is hard to understand, but having lived in Sweden and got a taste of the utter arrogance and stupidity of the Swedish justice system, it´s not as surprising to me as it is for people abroad. What I find even more disturbing is that the absolute majority of the Swedish so called free press supports Goliath in this fight against David. But again, this is nothing unusual for Sweden.
In all the cases that someone have been lucky enough to get a real journalist on the case and thereby managed to get a retrial after having spent years in jail or in mental asylums, the swedish media have always taken the governments side against the victims. One recent example is Thomas Quick that was sentenced for eight different murders in eight different trials, now after having spent almost his whole adult life in a mental institution drugged out of his wits, he turs out to be innocent. The guy was rewarded with a unlimited supply of drugs in return for his confessions. When they stopped the drugs, he stopped confessing, but then he was already convicted of eight murders. He has since been freed in three of the cases.
by the way Thomas Quick had the same lawyer as the two women accusing Assange. In the case against Thomas Quick he formed an alliance with the prosecutor. He never once uttered a word in defense of his client.
Another image of Swedish justice. There are a lot more. And let it also be said. Being a radical feminist country, the dads and men generally have a much harder time in the Swedish courtrooms. The same goes for custody cases where dads loose their children after having been accused of wrongdoing. Freed or not, they never see their kids again.
Finally I would like to thank the journalists at 4 corners in Australia for an excellent job. It would be great if they did a follow up where they dug a bit deeper into Swedish justice. They would find lot´s of cases where men are sent away without proof. Sometimes even in spite of proof that is exonerating.
In another life and born in another country, perhaps I as well could work as a journalist at a big network with resources enough to pull off something like this. I would just love that.
But I was born in Sweden, and here fine journalistic work like this is not appreciated, so it stays a dream.
